Fry's Polony Sausage

I was in town the other day and came across this in a freezer section of a health food shop: Fry's Polony. It was quite expensive at just under €5.00, but I decided to give it a go because it was pretty large and would probably do me 2-3 meals. I was actually looking for seitan, and this was the closest I came to it that day. It does, in fact, taste EXACTLY like paté, so for people who used to like that sort of thing then this is a winner! It's garlic flavoured and you can eat it raw, heat it up in a microwave, fry it, grill it - do anything with it really. It's not very spreadable though, but I think this would be pretty amazing filling for a sausage roll. I don't think meat eaters would be able to tell the difference! It sort of tastes like the fake meat in Linda McCartney's vegan sausage rolls. Here's a picture of the sausage cut in half, you can get about 6 thick slices out of half a sausage. I had to hold it up to take a photo as Gerry kept sniffling it and trying to eat it!

I fried it lightly in a frying pan and served it with some steamed green beans and broccoli as I was starving and didn't feel in the mood for cooking when I came home. Granted, it doesn't look very appetising or adventurous, but I did enjoy it! I'll try something a little more exciting with the other half over the weekend. I'd say it would be nice as breadcrumbed burgers, or in a warm bagel with fake cheese and rocket.

  2. It's so good! I actually ended up eating most of it raw because I was too lazy to think of ways to cook it. It's lovely to have a couple slices as a snack, but it's just too addictive, you end up eating the whole thing! haha.

  4. Wow I'm adding your blog too, it's fantastic!! I've had a quick scroll down your first posts and I'm already salivating and am incredibly jealous of your trips to Belgium and Germany! Always wanted to go to Berlin... pretty much just for the vegan food alone!! Love the pink hair by the way! And Brighton is a really great place, I used to go on holiday there as a kid all the time. Would love to go back, Red Veg is there isn't it? A few friends of mine went to uni in Brighton, they loved it there :)

  5. Nice! I've never had paté but I bet this would be good in a sandwich or something like that? The wrapping on it scares me somewhat ;)

  6. Hi, I love Fry's products too. I'm moving to Dublin soon. What are the best vegan-friendly stores around? especially, ones that stock Fry's stuff. Thanks.

  7. @Aoife: Yes it would be great in a sandwich, probably with some vegan mayo and salad, or some relish and fake cheese. NOM!

@Yash: There are loads of really good places in Dublin, but some are quite expensive. I tend to mainly shop in the Asian markets and in supermarkets, rather in health food stores, as they can be a rip off. The only place I've come across that stocks Fry's is a health food shop on Wexford Street, up from Whelans pub. I can't remember what it's called though! There is a great health food shop called the Hopsack in Rathmines, which is near the canal - an area popular with students in Dublin. If you go back to my first ever posts on this blog you will also find information about great vegan places to eat such as Blazing Salads and Cornucopia: they do products you can take away too and you don't have to eat them immediately. Hope you like Dublin!
