Gerry's Vegan Transition

I can't believe that I have finally done it - I've taken the plunge and bought vegan dog food for Gerry!

In the past it has been difficult for me to find a good enough deal on vegan dog food to justify spending that amount of money when I have only had a part time job. How ironic it is that now I have been made redundant I am splashing out on it! Actually, getting this deal from Zooplus with the discount for first orders brought the total for 20kg of Yarrah down to just under €65, which is very reasonable indeed.

I really hope Gerry likes his new food, and I shall probably supplement it with rice and veggies depending on how he gets on (I've heard some dogs lose weight on vegetarian food, even though it does make their coats and skin a lot healthier), as well as his other treats. Of course, I can always go back to his normal good quality German organic food if the vegan lifestyle doesn't suit him... but it's worth a try for a couple of months at such a good price, isn't it?!

  1. Poor dog, forced into veganism. It's just not right for a dog to not eat meat as God intended it to. Surely if you abstained from cheating your mutt out of meat due to the high cost of buying vegetarian food then you could have prepared homemade dog food to his taste.

  2. Thanks, Anonymous. But I am not an expert enough on canine nutrition to be able to make homemade meals from scratch, and homemade meals would actually be even more expensive. I would rather feed him a quality vegetarian dog food that is 100% complete and be sound in the knowledge that he is getting all the nutrients he needs from it. If you're going to a) post anonymously and b) be a complete asshole while you're at it, then I suggest you take a step back and realise that most dog owners don't know what the hell they are doing feeding their dogs complete shit like Bakers, Pedigree and the supermarket equivalents that are full of sugars and preservatives and are far more harmful to a dog than a scientifically proven vegetarian kibble. Go get your facts straight before coming back here.

  3. I think it's terrific that you're giving this a shot. So many dogs do so well on a vegan diet. Your response to "anon" was excellent, btw. :)

  4. Thank you! I'm just giving this a go, i mean if it doesn't suit him I have no problem going back to how he was... But if he likes it / thrives on it, then that's great :) x

  5. Hello anonymous, I've been reading this blog a long time and can assure you that velovegan has researched this matter carefully, totally knows what she is talking about and always has the best interests of her dog at heart. Good luck VV, let us know how it goes and is there any update on the other lurcher you rescued that came to England?

  6. Hello there! Thanks for the support ;) I don't mind lively discussion and always respect others' opinions, but if they are going to come onto MY blog, tell me how I should look after MY dog, and do it anonymously, then I'm definitely not going to be polite! Especially as I have researched this and have even had the sense to say if it doesn't work for him then I would immediately swap him back to his old food. I'd never put my dog in danger, and why would there be a vegan kibble for sale if it didn't give a dog all that it needs? I think anonymous needs to go look up exactly how common vegan dogs are - he or she may be surprised that there are thousands out there who are on a vegan diet for many reasons, a lot don't even have vegan owners and it's purely for health benefits!

As for Logi, as he is now called (short for Logan), he is hopefully going to his forever home on Thursday! I shall update when I know more! Xxx
